Stephanie Angelo: A Blind Eye
September 1-28, 2016
Opening Reception: September 2, 6-8pm
“It was Shakespeare who popularized the phrase “Love is Blind.”
Around the same time the figure of Justice began to be depicted as blindfolded woman.
A Blind Eye addresses the idea of blindness in these two personifications and gives a nod to the age with a series of still lifes.
Threading together symbols of these characters highlights both the positive and negative quality of blindness. Do we as a society accept blindness in one and clear vision in the other? Does blindness really depict objectivity or impartiality? Is that true for both Love and Justice?
Presently, news feeds barrage us with reports of violence from around the world. Calls for unity and justice arise. In our current society, where emotions are running high and passions both bring us together and separate us, we recognize a place for both. Love and Mercy is what we need tonight.”
